In 1998, Joel and Ethan Coen followed their massively successful crime thriller Fargo with a Chandleresque kidnapping caper called The Big Lebowski. Starring Jeff Bridges as "The Dude," the bowling-centric stoner comedy was initially viewed as a misfire for the up-and-coming filmmaking duo.
