Aren't the stand alone movies (i.e. Ironman 3, Cap 2, Thor 2) the "extended editions" where the sidekicks and secondary characters get to shine? Falcon was amazing in Cap 2, I loved him. But there really wouldn't be a place for him in the Avengers movie. I'd argue that Hawkeye and Black Widow, two ACTUAL Avengers, are the secondary characters in Avengers and look how shoe horned they felt.

This is why we need the stand alone movies, this is why Steve didn't call Ironman for backup in Cap 2, it's to give the sidekicks a chance to shine and flesh out the world. Sure, seeing War Machine (or is he still Iron Patriot, they never resolved that) could've worked in Winter Soldier, but you don't go see a Cap movie for that.

The fact is that these are movies and they can't have the same level of cross over as their comic counterparts. I'd rather have a great movie with fewer characters than a movie so jam packed with people that there's no room for story or action.
