In 1915, D.W. Griffith released a silent film that remains, to this day, one of the most controversial movies ever made. The Birth of a Nation, a three-hour-long epic about the Civil War and Reconstruction, revolutionized filmmaking and was the first blockbuster in American history. However, the film also utilized a revisionist interpretation of history that portrayed freed slaves as villains while the Ku Klux Klan were depicted as heroes. At the time of its release, the film sparked protests from the NAACP and the re-emergence of the KKK. A century later, The Birth of a Nation remains difficult to watch and even more challenging to discuss. Join MovieDude Eric, Kent and Jonolobster as they attempt to pass judgment on this contentious film.
