In 1965, the Indonesian government was overthrown and the new regime used gangsters and paramilitary groups to find and slaughter nearly one million alleged communists and ethnic Chinese. Today, these men not only remain free but are seen as celebrities in Indonesian culture. Beginning in 2005, Danish director Joshua Oppenheimer offered these men the chance to tell their story of the killings on film in any way they wanted while Oppenheimer documented their lives. Released in 2012, The Act of Killing sparked the interest of acclaimed filmmakers Errol Morris and Werner Herzog (who added their names to the project) and garnered praise from the film community. But does the film deserve the acclaim it received for confronting these subjects honestly or does it blur the line between fiction and reality? MovieDude Eric, Kent, and Jonolobster investigate.
