In the mid-1970s, independent filmmaker George Lucas pitched an ambitious film to several movie studios: an homage to the sci-fi and swashbuckling serials of his childhood called The Star Wars. When 20th Century Fox took a chance and gave Lucas a $10 million budget to make the movie, no one expected the film would launch a worldwide fandom, a merchandising empire, and a film franchise of six "episodes" - soon to be seven. But is the Force still with the 1977 film (in its original format) or should it be sent to the trash compactor on the detention level?
